Canon Ixus & Windows XP Connection Problems

I have a problem with my Canon Ixus and windows XP.

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a
previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

It doesn't help if I restart, but if I disable device and uninstall
and reinstall the driver I can get it to connect OK once then back to
the above.

I notice the Canon drivers are not signed or any cannon drivers in XP.

I e-mailed Canon support in the UK about 2 weeks ago and have had no
reply. I went through the on-line help but no clues there. Anyone else
had/got this problem and hopefully a fix?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi there,

The fact that the driver is not signed is quite common. Basically to get it
signed they have to pay Microsoft a lot of money.

Have you ever tried using a registry cleaner? I use Ashampoo (paid for version)
but I think they still do the free one. What you can try is....

1) Uninstall the device driver
2) Remove the device itself
3) Re-boot the machine
4) Run your registry cleaner
5) Go to C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch and delete all files found in that directory
6) Re-boot the machine...you might want to use a defragmenter at this point
7) Close machine down and install device
8) Re-boot and follow New Device found procedure

The reason for rebooting the machine so many times is to force XP files into a
state where it believes that the device does not exist ... obviously, and to
ensure that there are no spurious references to that device elsewhere. Its a
bit of a bind, but its worth it.

Good Luck !
