I was wondering if it is advisable to turn this feature off (I believe you
can). I used my color ink on only a few occasions but am now getting a
low-ink warning for these tanks; if it's not innacurate, I assume it is
because of the auto-head cleaning, correct? Should I just turn that off and
if so, will I notice any degradation of quality--how often should I do the
cleaning manually? Help would be appreciated--thanks.

First of all ...remember that the auto cleaning is there for a reason,
keeping your nozzles clear!

It's probably better to spend some ink instead of disassambling the printer
to clean the print head ...or in worst case buy a new print head.

The devil you might not be aware of is known as underprinting. Or
overprinting if you like: this is printing black on a colour background -
and most inkjets do it. In a recent PC-Pro review of leading printers, I
think, from memory, Epson and HP admitted it was a technique and Canon
declined to comment.
So it may not matter whether you think you have a choice - the ink will go
down.

Is this done just to keep people buying more ink or are there other
legitimate reasons?

Apparently its intent is to darken the background for blacker blacks.
