Canon i865 and the two blacks

I've just been wondering, how does this printer know which black
cartridge to use?
Could it be a matter of what paper is chosen, such as photo compared
to plain, or maybe something to do with the quality settings?
Checking in the printers maintenance I can see that ink has been used
by both blacks, just barely since I only got the printer today, but
the left black cartridge, BCI-6BK, is kind of greyed out.

'Tony',

I add this review in case you have not seen it. I don't think it
answers your question, although I could have missed the point in which
you are interested.

Thanks Emrys, I did see that review earlier on.
What do you think of it so far?

Great. A whole lot faster than my old Epson 870. I've not tried photo
paper yet, though I do have some on the shelf, so can't comment on
that. So far I've used Canon High Res (HR-101N) paper and Epson Photo
Quality inkjet paper (s041061). Both papers are very much the same,
like plain paper but with a smoother, whiter surface on one side. So
far I've only printed a few scans of my DVD covers and it's hard to
pick from the original.
CD printing, I can't explain how good that is :)
I've been using Ritek printable DVD's and I couldn't be happier with
the results.
You must have purchased yours in the UK?

One of the colonies, Australia :)

ditto, I'm a happy little vegemite too.

I've done some 6x4 photos on Canon Pro paper, you'd need a magnifying glass
to have any reason to complain...

that page is bullshit. With my i850 (before my i865), I printed about 10
pages of text, and everything else was photo printing (glossy 6x4s etc

My BCI-3 black tank was 70% empty when I sold it for the i865 (still on
original colour tanks as well, just), so there is no way in hell they
BCI-3eBK is not used for photo printing.

Correct...the i850 does use the black ink in photos, but only for black
fill-in.

Even though the two inks are different (pigment vs dye), they still mix
well enough in photos to not be an issue. Perhaps the resin on photo
paper allows it to seal the ink without issues.

Definitely true. You just have to watch it print a photo with some black
in it. It lays down a layer of black ink first where necessary, and
then fills in with the other colors where it's not solid black. This was
one of the first things I noticed, which pleased me greatly.
