My i860 is a great printer, with one exception. When I print an
envelope, it invariably smears one or two small globs of black ink
along the top edge -- usually in the area near the return address. I
have to print two to three before I get one that's clean enough that
I'm not embarrassed to mail it. I'm using a pretty standard business
size envelope -- nothing special or particularly thick. I never see a
globbed up smearing problem on regular paper or photos.

Any suggestions? Maybe something I could clean?

I know exactly what you mean, my I960 does the same thing but my I850
does not. So its interesting to see that printers with the photo black
tanks give that little smear. Not that has anything to do with any of
it but still interesting.

I never investigated cleaning the rollers or anything or how to stop
the origin of it.

Nice thread, perhaps it will lead to an answer.

Does it only happen when you print a return address? (You could just
print it on the back instead.)

Allan.

No, it happens prior to printing the return address in the very top
left corner of the envelope as if the envelope is scraping it off the
top.

Perhaps the printhead is in place before the envelope feeds and then
the corner slightly touches the head prior to its printing as the
envelope is going into position.

If thats the case, then a slight downward bend of the corner may solve
the problem. Much like bending the end corners of 4x6 paper on the 850
to prevent sorta the same effect.

Ill give that a try and let you know.

I was just messing with envelope printing. Bending down the front
corners does infact help nearly 90 percent. The head is in position
after the envelope is lined up.

Looking at the process with the lid up, the envelope does seem to
graze the print head slightly and picking up residue notablely where
the glueflap is located as that would effectively be as thick as 3
sheets of paper.

I tried using the clockwise print rotation so the head could start
printing from the left as it normally would on a regular document but
that doesnt seem to work in office.

OK problem solved....
Stupid me, I never did see the "Envelope" option in the print media
settings of the drivers..

Its handling of the envelope is much more gentle and seems to shift
the head for a thicker media.. Looks perfect now.

SIGH!!!

the only thing that stinks is not being able to get in the printer
properties from word's envelope printing dialogue so it has to be set
prior to using it or atleast opened manually before printing...

Use the "ENVELOPE" media settings in the print driver prior to
printing. It will adjust the head and handle the envelope more gently
to prevent jamming as well.

If the 860 Does not have this feature, then the print head will have
the slider to accomodate for envelopes by increasing the gap for
thicker media like the 850 has.

The other thing I was going to suggest, is to move the thickness tab to the
right for envelopes.
