Canon i850 won't print black... and worse

The first part is pretty self-explanatory. Colors are great, but any
text or solid black doesn't come out at all. I suspect it has
something to do with the fact that I was out of the country for six
months, so it sat around and maybe the ink dried up? Anyway I spent a
fortune buying all new ink cartridges, thinking that would fix the
problem, but no cigar.

However here's the weird ("worse") part... when I go to the maintenance
tab and click either "Clean" or "Deep clean" nothing prints at all! I
just hear the servos spinning and things buzzing, but it doesn't even
advance any paper. Sometimes the same thing happens when I click
"Nozzle Check". I tried reinstalling/updating drivers, didn't help.

Can anybody help? Thanks!

The deep clean part is normal. All you will hear is the purging process.
When you do a nozzle check after a cleaning that is when something will
print.
Take the head out of the machine a soak it it ammonia and warm water for
about 15 minutes. Dry it off completely, especially the brass contacts, and
try a cleaning then nozzle check.
If needed I have a new printhead.

Are you currently and have you always used Canon ink? If so call
Canon. If not that is your problem.

Do not buy a new printhead unless you can get one for around $40.00.
You can find a new Canon printer including Canon ink for a good price
these days.,
