Used an old BJC7000 so far, and today purchased a new i850. Connected
via parallel to PC (same cable as used for the 7000; LPT1 configured as
ECF/EPP, bi-dir.).
Driver installed from CD as described. When started print head
justification, spool subsystem of my Win2k crashed.
Booted again; system printed justification page, that made the system
crash before. New request for head justification made it crash again.
Got the latest driver off the internet, installed over the CD version;
no change.

My system is a Win2000, german, SP3; PC is Desktop, 1,4 GHz Athlon, 524 MB.

Any ideas, what might cause this problem? I don't find any entries here
concerning similar effects...

Thanks for any hints - Dieter

Sounds like your BJC7000 might have its own spooler service installed.
check your services for it. Did you completely remove the BJC7000
drivers completely before installing the I850?

Also, Install the 850 drivers prior to attaching any cable. Then power
down, attach cable and boot up.

First of all many thanks to all of you for your suggestions!

The problem is still present, but there are some new infos on it: the
printer and the driver are working well - the problem is a corrupt
spooling service on my desktop.

Here's what I did:
I followed your suggestions to uninstall the 7000 drivers at first.
Since it had no uninstaller, I'd to do it manually. I uninstalled the
i850 as well , booted, and installed the i850 (from CD) again; starting
install w/o cabling, then w cable and printer switched on. At request to
print a test page the spooler crashed again!

Then I installed the i850 on my office laptop (IBM Thinkpad, W2000 SP3,
US version). I uninstalled the 7000 driver at first, and the i850 worked
from the start off w/o any problem!

So, I guess you are right suspecting on an own spooler service for the
7000 on my desktop. I checked the services in admin tool, but could not
find anything noticeable.

How could I repair Windows in case the spooling service has to be newly
installed ?

Thanks in advance - Dieter

Cari,
at first I thought both printers could be operated concurrently - so I
didn't uninstall. Due to the problems I've got and all your hints I
uninstalled the 7000. I'd to search the registry for entries and killed
all files that I could find.

The problem didn't disappear. I went to your webpage and found a link to
Bruce Sanderson's pages where hints to reset the whole print subsystem
are provided. I followed his suggestions and removed all printers and
drivers. So the system got quite clean. Installed again the i850.

Now - after doing some more tests - the situation is as follows:
When I print a job, the spooler crashes. After restarting the spooler
manually ("net start spooler"), the job (that is still in the spool
queue) is then executed. But when I start the CANON print monitor befor
I print, it works all fine, the spooler doesn't crash any more!

I don't understand this behaviour, but I have configured the monitor to
start with windows start, and that way I don't have any problems. Maybe
this could be of help for any other users who have a similar effect and
are searching for a workaround.

Thanks for your help and your comments!

Dieter
