I recently tried to purchase this printer and was told by the store,
after being on order for about a week, that they were told by Canon it
was discontinued and that no replacement had been announced at that
time. I know see that the i856 is being advertised but can find no
information about this printer at any of the Canon sites. Anyone know
anything about it?
I did notice that the i550 has recently been superseded by the i560 so
I would not be surprised if the same holds true for the i850.
You can see it advertised at this store....

Why would Canon want to kill off one of their most successful products
without a replacement? I looked at Canon's Australian site and saw no
mention of the i850 being dropped, but I did see the addition of the i560
(not i860). No doubt Canon will come out with a newer model, but I suspect
the i850 will be around for a long time. Try a different vendor. The one you
were dealing with doesn't sound like they are fully competent.

Good Question.
Maybe the i865 listed at the store I mentioned is the replacement and
has not yet been officially announced by Canon.

I just checked and did not see the i560, though it is listed at the US
canon site. Maybe the Aussie site is a bit slow to update.
Some Aussie stores that were advertising the i850 have stopped doing
so completely and this gives me the impression it's on the way out in
this country. Now I'm unsure if I should buy the i560 (which they say
is now like the i850) or see if the i865 eventuates.

Seems absurd to advertise a model yet to be even announced, many months
before it will even be available in stores. This just confuses people,
....as you've noticed ;-)

Sure does.
Now I see in the printer forum over at http://www.dpreview.com that
someone has now seen the Canon i960 mentioned at the US Canon site,
I've not looked too hard myself but it's definitely not listed amongst
the other printers. If I was in the market right now and was
considering the i950 I think I'd be waiting a little bit longer. Odds
are though that the only real difference will be the direct connection
to Canon cameras.

The i850 is replaced by the i860 which is a 5 cartridge printer (2 black
cartridges, ones specifically for B&W).Also USB 2.0 port.
