Hi.
What driver can I use with the i850 that really will get me good printing
results?

I tried the advice at Linuxprinting.org but I do not like it, it looks
grainy

Thanks!

The open source drivers are not so good (600 dpi maximum). I believe
this is because Canon does not freely give out the specs of their
printers (and scanners too, btw).

There is a commercial linux driver that works really well, available
from www.turboprint.de (costs EUR 25).

And don't forget the binary drivers from Canon at
http://cweb.canon.jp/drv-upd/bj/bjlinux220.html :-)

They work pretty well (IMO probably even better than TurboPrint), the major
drawback is the documentation which is Japanese only. There is a comprehensive
manual included, however, I had big problems reading it :-( But at least I was
somehow able to find all the options and option values of bjfilterpixus850i
which are not documented otherwise.

Regards,
Gerhard
