I believe these two printers are virtually the same. I am considering
purchasing the i560 and would welcome any comments from other users. If you
take out a catridge and then put it back, does it still work. I ask this
because I wonder if it's possible to swap carts according print job , ie
Cannon ink for best printing and compatible ink when quality prints are not
so crucial.

Kinda. You should clean the galleries of ink to avoid cross
contamination. If you really want to swap cartridges, you might as well
get a second head (at which point you might look into another printer,
one for your GP printing, one for your fine printing). Also the ink
useage counter will get all upset using two separate cartridges, even
with separate heads.

I'm a little confused about that last statement. Assuming the i850 is very
similar to the i860, it would have an optical sensor system to detect
remaining ink quantity. Where does the counter you mention come in? I
looked at the review in Steves Digicams, and he explained the optical pretty
well. Are you saying that in addition to the optical system there is some
kind of counter?

I could be wron though, let's just say that.

Why in the world would you have to switch inks. I've been using MIS
inks for a few years now with absolutely stunning results. So are many
professionals who sell their work (like a friend of mine). I use the
same Canon ink in three different Canon printers and recently tried it
in two different HP printers with results every bit as good as OEM
ink. I was surprised at how well it works on the HPs. In fact the
refilling of HPs can be hit & miss in general. But since I started
using the Canon refill ink it's been successful every time.
