I rarely use the color inkjets. Today I printed out 200 pages in black and
white. When it was finished, all three color ink cartridges showed they were
almost empty. I don't get it.
This is a common issue.
Whenever you want to print in black and white only, make sure you select
the "grayscale printing" option in the printer driver or printer
settings. If you don't, the colours may be mixed together to make a
simulated black.
Often what looks like black is not 100% black, but rather a very dark
blue or purple or some other colour (99.9% black). Your eyes say it is
black, but a computer knows it is not true black, so it mixes the
colours to make the 99.9% colour.
Note that you can set the printer driver to default to grayscale by
setting it in the driver. Close any open programs, then open the
printers window, right-click the Canon i550 printer, select Printer
Preferences, check the grayscale option there, and click Apply or OK.
Now when you start a program, it will default to black-only, but can be
changed to colour if needed.
If you ever want to print in colour for that one document or session of
documents, just choose the File menu from the program, select "Print..."
and you can make whatever changes you wish in there.
