I have been using this printer for a while in draft mode . The black ink
monitor showed little usage. I tried to print, and zow! Low ink. From
one session to the next the ink monitor went from almost full to almost
empty. Is this a feature of this printer, or is there something wrong?

Don't fret, it's designed that way. The monitor's only real purpose is
to show "low" and "empty", and not grades of "full".

That's the way my i850 works and it's quite normal. Basically, the
monitor constantly shows "full" until the prism at the bottom of the
cartridge triggers a "low ink" warning when the ink level drops to
about 20%. If you refill at home, the "low" ink warning is the time to
do it. Don't wait till it says "empty", it gets more difficult to get
the ink flowing again.

If you wish to keep a more accurate eye on the ink level, you've only
to open the lid and look at the cartridges. You can view the ink going
down day by day or week by week, depending on your use. That's the way
I do it. I just peeked under the hood at mine and colors are just about
100% full, black about 60%.

Yah thats the way it is made to work. But dont fret as your sponge is
still saturated and u probably have a tiny bit left in the liquid
chamber to allow you plenty of time to figure out your refill options.

I just received some blank cartridges. I just posted about some blank
cartridges I am using for refills. They are really nice. You may be
interested in reading about it.

For good ink I would recommend alotofthings.com or atlanticinkjet.com
they both use the same formulalabs ink except atlantics compatible
cartridges. Alotofthings.com uses formulalabs ink which is a perfect
match for canon's ink and much cheaper than any other vendor.

Those are some very economical refill options that may save you some
money.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will try alotofthings.
