Been performing very well but recently am getting serious 'banding' across
photo prints. Have tried numerous cleaning and realignment sessions, water
wash of head and even diluted ammonia soaking on head but problem is getting
worse. Any ideas as to why this is happening and if there is a solution - be
obliged.

I doubt if you are using canon recommended ink. if so then it is time
to purchase a new printer that will cost a little more than a set of new
ink.

I bought one of those recently used for a friend. Ok printer, not as
fast as a i560 or ip3000 but still, nice enough for photos.

Printheads are a limited life product, banding can be a result of
burnout. But there is still a chance a more agressive cleaning might
be helpful.

Otherwise, those printheads are $50ish

Or, as the new canons actually offer improved resolution, you can find
these in 2nd hand shops.

Given that ink for a "new" canon, which you can in all fairness get for
US$80ish averages about $13.50 for color & small black, $17ish for the
big black. The ink the i550 is cheaper, in fact I believe office depot
offers a bci-3e 4 pack for $40ish.

If you are using OEM ink...than you just got BURNED....Buy a new
printer it's cheaper than buying the OEM ink.
