I purchased a Canon FS4000US film scanner about 2 years ago
and it worked fine. About 8 weeks ago, it quit. I unplugged
it (USB) and plugged it in - computer finds it OK. I go to
Photoshop and go File - Import and there is the scanner
listed. When I click to scan, it says "can't find scanner".
The drivers are missing and it says I need to reload them.
When I try to load them, all I get is: "The class installer
has denied the request to install or upgrade this device".
I had a computer tech try to install them for 8 hours and
he gave up!
What gives and how do I get the damn drivers to install in
XP? Where did the original drivers go?
I now have a $1300 paper weight on my desk - my scanner!

Hi Jim,

I have this file scanner as well, and it's running on my system. It
required me to get the latest drivers from Canon.

You'll need to install FilmGet version 1.03 first:
http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/customer/filmgetv103.html

After you've installed that, you will need to update to FilmGet version
1.04:
http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/customer/filmgetv104.html

After I did this, I was able to scan my negatives and slides using Photoshop
and Digital Image Pro.

I'd recommend you start with this. If that doesn't work, please let me know
and I will look into your issue more.

Turn the scanner off

Control Panel, Add/Remove software, and uninstall the driver if present

Right click on My Computer, properties, hardware, device manager, right click on the scanner and uninstall

Use notepad to look at all c:\windows\inf\oem#.inf (your windows directory and # for the file number.

Any file that mentions your scanner in the 1st few lines, add ".bak" to the file name. Do the same for the matching .PNF file

Follow your FS4000US manual and do a new "1st time" install" of the scanner software
