I have a Canon FS2710 Slide/Negative scanner, connected to my win2000
machine via a PCI SCSI card.

I will shortly be taking delivery of a new WinXP machine. I have been
looking for a suitable cheap PCI SCSI card for use on that machine, but
none appear to come with a WinXP driver.

Is WinXP compatable with SCSI, or does it automatically provide the drivers
for most SCSI cards? I am also wondering if the scanner will need a new
driver for WinXP; it is a few years old now and perhaps no longer supported.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Windows XP requires the installation of the ASPI layer to support SCSI.

ASPI layer:

Very likely your old PCI SCSI card will work in Windows XP, try first to
see if Windows XP has a built-in driver for the card. If XP can not find a
built in driver then try the original driver from the original CD.

This card is often referred to in the NG as a good card for Windows XP.

EBay is a good source for PCI SCSI cards that work in Windows XP (Be sure
they say so!).

Whatever you're doing now in Win2K
should work for XP, I would think.

The PCI card you have now should
install automatically. Ie., I expect
XP will recognize it and will
automatically install the driver for it.

If the scanner driver still fails after
that, you may need to download the ASPI
package from Adaptec's web site.

I have the same scanner on Windows XP. Works fine. Most is detected by XP
itself. Just install Windows 2000 software as distributed on the site.

Thanks for that comment, I will give it a try.

I have previously had difficulty on Win2000. getting the system to recognise
the scanner. It appears to install ok and functions correctly, but is listed
in Device Manager as Unknown Device with a question mark against it. Also it
is not listed under Scanners in Control Panel.
As I say, it still functions alright. Hope I don't have similar problems in
WXP.

Thanks again
