I have a problem with a Canon camcorder. The camcorder is installed on a
Packard Bell iExtreme Windows XP Home Edition SP2 PC via Firewire. The device
shows in Windows System Hardware Properties, but Windows Movie Maker does not
recognise it, or pick it up to capture video. It also does not show in
Scanners and Cameras. The IEEE1394 card has been swapped over, the digital
camcorder has been changed, and the same problem persists.
When trying the camcorder on a laptop with built in Firewire, the same
problem exists, when trying to use it in Windows Movie Maker – the capture
device is not recognised. It also does not show in Scanners and Cameras, but
shows in Windows System Hardware Properties.
Other video editing software has also been tried, and the digital camcorder
is not recognised.
When tried on a MAC laptop, the camcorder is recognised straight away, and
video downloaded without problem.
Please advise if I am doing something wrong, or if Windows Movie Maker ver.
2 has a software fault in not recognising high definition video devices.

Thanks.

If the camera isn't recognized by Windows, which it apparently isn't, then
the problem is not with Movie Maker.
Normally I would say the problem is hardware related but you tried two
different cards with no luck and you tried the camera on a Mac and it
worked. Did you use the same IEEE cable on the Mac that you used on the PC?
Other than the cable I would suggest going to one of the XP Newsgroups to
see if you get some insight there. But check back here as well since
somebody here may offer you something else.

Movie maker in XP does not recognise hdv camcorder sources, you need to
update your software to something that does, such as adobe premiere elements
3 or Ulead video studio 10+, or Vista
