Would anyone have a repair manual that explains how to reassemble this
gear train properly? Thanks.

Beware, most Canon inkjet printer manuals do not provide sufficient detail to
enable you to do this. I don't have this particular manual but I have manuals
for similar printers of this series and none of them provide either diagrams or
exploded parts information that will help you.

Thanks for your reply - I wondered about that!

Actually, it's not a problem of reasssembly, it's a problem of timing
- ie, setting the gears in their correct relation so that the cam
operates the paper feed mechanism properly - it seems to be out of
sync.

The nearest thing I have is the BJC3000 manual, these are very different in
construction but there is a description of how to time the printer mechanism.
If you want to try that please e-mail me.
Alternatively if you buy the BJC4000 manual it may have the appropriate
instructions, I don't know for sure, you could try www.manuals4you.com and ask
the owner if the instructions are in the manual, they are very helpful.

Possibly solved!

A closer inspection revealed index marks on the 'frame' and notches in
two of the gears. Lining these up seems to have fixed the timing
problem - now I'm hoping it will fix the original erratic paper
feeding problem as well.

Thanks for all your help.

You are most welcome, hopefully that will fix your problem.
The manual I have for the BJC3000 includes timing marks etc. so I expect the
same will be true for the BJC4000.
