I'm not a pro photographer. I have shit loads of slides and negs to do.
and i have an old genius colourpage. Ebuyer don't list this as a flatbed.
novatech does. I currently own a scan elite II. Which is extraordianarily
slow even with firewire. Would this machine be an upgrade?

When it comes to scan quality, it isn't - certainly not for 35mm. The
9950F is a flatbed scanner, which means that its real resolution is not
4800 but closer to 2400 pixels per inch, which is less than the 2820ppi
your Elite II offers.

If you want to scan huge quantities at a lower resolution, the 9950F may
be an interesting option for you.

Thanks. Do you happen to have both of them then? Its basically the speed
and hopefully a better flatbed than the genius. plus it'll do medium format
should the fancy take me. Having a three in one will save lots of desk
space.

No, I don't have the Elite II, I have the Elite 5400. Scanning with the
5400 at half of its resolution (2700ppi) still gives better results than
the Canon.
I'm using the Canon for medium format - it's OK for that purpose,
considering the cost of a dedicated MF filmscanner.
