Canon 8400F will not detect film

I have a Canon 8400F scanner. It does an admirable job with 35mm
strips, but often will not detect 6x6, 4.5x6 or 6x9 B&W negatives. I
get some message like "there is no film in the scanner".

This is not the same situation as when the cable to the lid is loose
which says something like "this scanner will not scan film". The cable
is plugged in tightly.

Sometimes when I get the 'no film in scanner" type message I can make
it scan by moving the film in the holder.

Any suggestions about how to make the scanner detect negatives better
would be appreciated.

Is it possible to use software other than the Canon factory supplied
stuff to operate the scanner.

Are there any software upgrades available?

Thanks,
Ernie

You haven't said what version of it you are using, so not having a
crystal ball... I'd suggest you check the Canon site for upgrades to the
Canon software, and see if Vuescan supports it - you can get a free
trial download of it which watermarks the image but will show if it will
do the job or not.

Get out of the Thumbnail Views Mode and see if the scanner sees the film
then.

Thumbnail Views Mode on/off is the first icon on the tool bar above the
preview window in Advanced Mode.

Thanks for your reply. The program supplied by Canon is Canoscan
toolbox 4.8

Are you by chance putting the film holder in upside down? If there is a
calibration window in the scanner holder like on the 99xx series, it must be
positioned correctly so that the scanner/software can orient itself.

Vuescan works very well with the 8400F
