Hi,

When editing a user in WindowsXP, I cannot view the 'Member Of' tab. The
error I get is "The following error occurred while attempting to read the
properties for user XXXX: The Server service is not started."

I can't find the 'Server' service in my list of services - is there a way I
can repair this situation without a full reinstall?

Thanks

James

short answer

1) You don't need it
2) You don't want it

long answer

you don't have the "server" service or the "workstation" service because
you don't have "Microsoft Networking" installed. That's just fine, you
don't need it if your machine is not part of a network or you are not
sharing resources. If all you do is connect to the internet via a dial-up
connection then you don't need it. You don't want it either, it opens you
up to hacking. Plus it frees up a substantial amount of memory and speeds
up boot time significantly.

Yes, there are a handful of other services/tools that are dependent upon
Server and/or Workstation being installed, but for the most part you don't
need them either.

So, if you REALLY wanted it anyway how do you install it? Simply run the
Network Setup Wizzard in the Control Panel | Network folder. That'll
install all that stuff by default. Then how do you get rid of it? Right
click on your dial-up connection icon, choose properties, then under
"protocols" highlite and click the Remove button for "File and Printer
Sharing" and "Microsoft Networking", leaving only TCP/IP left [if you use
AOL there will be a lot of other lines there too, VPN blah blah blah,
leave them alone; when you get a chance switch ISPs and delete all that
AOL crap from your machine!].
