Do you have a third-party firewall or an antivirus with "Internet Worm
Protection" (like Norton 2005/06) which acts as a firewall? If you have
Norton or McAfee, then that program would be acting as the firewall and
the WF would be off.

You haven't provided enough information for us to help you. Post back
with a better description of your computer, what antivirus/firewalls
you had before SP2, etc.

I am using a dell Deminsion 4600 and prior to updating i was just using the
basic windows firewall. I am using Avg antivirius which does not have a
firewall built in(I don't think so anyway).

Also i cannot just turn it on as all the options are grayed out.

When i open the windows firewall at the top of the screen in blue writing it
says "For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy". I've
tryed to edit this using START, RUN, and typing mmc and adding the local user
and group snap-in But it says i cannot do this in the home version of win XP.

And thanks for the reply

Was the computer completely virus/malware-free before you installed
Service Pack 2? If it was not, then that is probably why you are having
the problem. See this information by MVP Ramesh:
