Cannot use DHCP for TCP/IP on my network card

To cure a problem of Norton Antivirus interfering with Microsoft Office XP,
I had to deinstall Norton Antivirus yesterday. After I had rebooted I then
found that somehow I had lost my network connection. I have a router that
doubles as a hub (Netgear MR814) connected to my cable modem that works as a
DHCP server for my LAN at home. My TCP/IP connection is set to DHCP, but
this no longer works. If I put in the IP address manually, everything works
fine, but using DHCP does not work. I reset the router and tested its DHCP
server functionality and all its hub ports in various permutations with the
other machines on my network, and everything works fine there. I even
replaced the network card. Same problem. When I set TCP/IP for automatically
getting an IP from the DHCP server, it does not work. I am convinced,
therefore, that it's a configuration problem of Windows XP.
Any suggestions, anyone?
Thanks.

Still trying to find the cause of the problem, I was rummaging through the
"Component Services" under XP's "Administrative tools, and I found that the
'DHCP Client' services are stopped on the machine. Attempts to start them
produce the error message
Could not start the DHCP Client service on Local Computer.
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.
Am I correct in assuming that this is why I cannot use DHCP? What can/should
I do now?
Thanks.

Well, I found the solution of the problem: see
http://www.bl.com/moshe/text/quiddities/norton_errors.html . Following the
steps outline there, at least DHCP works now again. Choosing 'Repair this
connection' under "Network Connections" still produces the error message
The following steps of the repair operation failed:
Purging the DNS Resolver cache
but this doesn't seem to have any negative effect and DHCP works as it
should.

What a long, strange trip it's been for you, "hh". ;-)

Thanks for posting that fix -- I'm sure that it will help other
people. I've bookmarked the web page for future reference.
