Hellow there,

I have this problem... when I try to update Windows Defender, a popup apears
(near the clock) that tells me that it is connecting to the Internet to
aquire new definitions and engine updates. Passed 30 secs, a new popup tells
me that windows Defender is up-to-date.... an that's it. No updates are made.

What can I do? What can be the problem?

Thanks in advance.

I had this problem for 1.5 months and solved it removing and reinstallig
defender as instructed by a MS Support Engineering. They were as follows:

Step 1:
============
Before removing a program it must be stop and exited.
Stop and close Defender as follows: Click the Tool tab / General Settings /
scroll down to Real time protection options and uncheck Turn on real-time
protection (recommended) / click Save and exit. If you are also using
Windows Live
One Care, go to View and change settings and on the Antivirus tab select Off,
click Ok and exit. Then follow the instructions sent to me by Vanessa Hu, a
Microsoft Support Engineer.

Step 2:
============
1. Click Start, click Run, type "msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" (without quotation marks) in the Open
box, and then click OK.
2. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from this
following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
3. Run the utility from Start -> All Programs -> Windows Install Clean Up.
4. Select all Windows Defender related entries from the list (if there are)
and click Remove.

Step 3:
============
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Download and install Windows Defender from the following link and reboot
the computer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en
3. Please go to Microsoft Update:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and install the updates for
Windows Defender.

Done all the above the Defender updated and work to perfection.

I followed this to a T and the only thing that didn't work for me is that the
uninstalled failed due to it not finding the source. But after I just
reinstalled the program the Defender was able to update itself successfully.
Thanks.

Hi!

I went to the update site, but I did not see a selection for Windows
Defender. Is it contained in one of the other security updates?

Sorry..I posted to the wrong reply at first...

The only problem with this solution for me was it only worked the first time
! sure defender updated its self when reinstalled ! however every update
since it continues to go in circles ! yes if with windows install cleaner I
remove the exsisting definitions then using the check updates it will install
! However its a hardly the ideal way to proceed without my intervention on
each computer, defender would never update !
The latest 1.14.1395.2 was even worse ! I always try the logical proceedure
of a normal install with an update before using the work around ! and
normally it replaces the previous signature version but won't install in
defender ! this time it wouldn't replace the old version at all. Until I
removed the old signature by windows install cleaner !

But from your reply can I conclude that for you defender updates without any
intervention by you ?
