Cannot uninstall Internet Explorer from XP

I was wondering whether anyone out there knows of a way of uninstalling
Internet Explorer? The problem is that even though I don't use it (I am now
using Firefox), it still pops up on its own with advertisements, some of
which even I find disgusting. I realise that Microsoft control my computer
and therefore make for me the decision of which programs I have installed,
but surely there is a way I can delete some of the critical Internet Explorer
files. I have had a quick look, but I am concerned that without knowing what
I am doing I might cripple important OS files.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You can't.

Besides, you need it for Windows Updates.

Sadly, it is part of your operating system. It is no longer a free-standing
program.

Go to tools/advanced and disallow all 3rd party stuff. Set you security
settings high. Make sure Firefox is your default browser. Run the basic
spyware programs to clean up.

IE has one purpose -- Windows update. But guess what? You can download most
of the stuff without even using it. Microsoft is so petty that they won't
allow the WU software to run on anything but IE. Typical BS.

Congrats on using Firefox. I have been with it for awhile now and beg
everyone I know to use it. Anybody who has was thrilled.

I have been trying for weeks to either repair or uninstal IE6.2. My problem
is that IE will not run at all, when I click on it the hour glass runs for
about 3 second then nothing. I use firefox, but there are occasion when IE is
required, for example to run browser based installation programs.

An installs I try and do tell me I have a more recent version installed. I
even tried editing the entry in the register for installed software, without
success.

I am very reluctant to reinstall windows XP but its getting close.

Hi Russell :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Error Message When You Try to Install Internet Explorer 6.0:

A Previous Installation Has Pending Work Requiring a Reboot

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

There is no IE 6.2, so I'll assume you mean the IE version supplied by WinXP
SP2. Go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. Make sure Show Updates is
checked and scroll down to Windows XP Service Pack 2.

IE does not appear in the add / remove programs list and is not checked in
the windows components list. I tried the register fix given in KB 318378 but
without
success. Still when I try and run ie6setup.exe ( version 6.0.2800.110 ) I
get the message. Setup has detected a newer version of IE on this machine.
Setup cannot continue.

All attempts to reload IE by ticking the IE box in windows components fail
to fix the underlying problen that IE fails to start.

If IE is popping up with ads, the problem is not IE: the problem is
that you likely have spyware on your PC. Get rid of the spyware,
continue to use FF, and IE will cause no special problems.
