sounds like you have dialup- phone line connected to a
modem. I would hook up a phone to the same phone line and
see if it works. Then I would call the phone company and
tell them you want your line tested for noise cuz your
computer won't connect.
then I would query your modem( I think you can do it from
device manager-right click on my computer>select
properties> click on hardware or device manager> look for
modem>right click on modem>select properties, I think it's
on one of the tabs- my modem is not in my computer so I
can't check it to see if it's right) to see if it receives
and sends a signal. Then I would( and have done all these
things) just for the hell of it, I'de go to the modem's
website and install the latest driver for it knowing your
model #. If all that fails, call AOL and tell them about
the hell you're going through,and ask them if anything
might be wrong on their end(are there other complaints
from your area?)Then I'de see about DSL or Cable modem
that you can afford
