Did you even try what was stated in the message you quoted? It was quite
explicit.

Brian - I have the same problem. Unforunately for me, the / switch didn't
help. I run it and the same error message comes up when I open with the /
switch. I've tried to restart, etc and still get the same error. I then
tried this:

1. Created new profile and opened it - no problem loading it.
2. Imported the old pst into the new profile
3. Restarted Outlook with new profile
4. Got the same error message
5. Tried to run /resetnavpane again - ugh - same error!

Is the pst itself corrupt and if so, is there anything I can do?

All of this after loading SP2 onto Vista.

Thanks for any ideas!

What is the exact text of the error messages.
I then tried this:

Importing is not recommended. Open the data file instead. File>Open>Outlook
Data File.
3. Restarted Outlook with new profile
4. Got the same error message

You did include the space between "outlook.exe" and "/resetnavpane", correct?

Use the Inbox Repair Tool (SCANPST.EXE) to check the data file for problems.

Thanks for the help, Brian. The error message is "cannot open microsoft
outlook. unable to open the outlook window". I did run SCANPST.EXE and I am
using the switch correctly. I am able to open the profile in /safe mode.
I have done that and have made all add-ins inactive. I have also deleted
the .xml and .dat files associated with that profile. Doing that allows me
to open with the /resetnavpane switch. However, if I close and open the
profile again with /resetnavpane (this time without first deleting the .xml
and .dat files) I get the same error message. One note - I'm only using
this profile for contacts and calendar - there are no email accounts in this
profile.

What does the /safe switch do - does it disable specific features and if so,
which ones?

Thanks again for your time!

I had the same problem running Outlook 2007 on an XP Pro machine. It was
working fine, then got the same error. I tried the /safe and /resetnavpane
tricks
with no luck.
I finally searched for "Outlook.exe" and found the file in two
place, one in
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE 2000\OFFICE12\
and one in
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007\OFFICE12\

The files were the same size, and the same date (8/17/2009).

The one in the 2000 folder works. The one in the 2007 folder, where the
shortcut points, generates the error.

That's great, I have my email back, but updates in the future will be to the
file in the 2007 folder. How do I make the 2007 one work?

This was amazing and worked like a charm!! you saved me from turning the
computer into a frisbee.
