I have a customer that has a Win2k3 server that about a week ago they
reported that all users do not and can not set a default printer. We tried to
setup a local user rather than a domain user and the problem still occured,
we also setup a new printer and at the completion of the setup an error is
displayed saying that a default printer could not be set. There is nothing
being displayed in the event logs either.

Any help would be appreciated

the default printer is stored in registry at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Device.
Maybe it's a security problem. Use regmon from sysinternals.

I too am experiencing this problem on a Windows 2003 server. The
default administrator account is able to use printers and set default
printers, but other users (even those who are members of both the local
and the domain administrators groups) cannot.

I tried to browse to the registry key suggested by Dieter, and was able
to on the default Administrator account, but not using any of the other
accounts.

Any suggestions? Greatly appreciated...

I went through the reg keys also using remon and could not find anything out
of the ordinary, here I thought I knew Win2k3 pretty well,

I looked at the reg in the CU settings and the user has full rights to the
reg keys etc., I used regmon and I could find anything that look suspicious
there either so any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Mike,

I'm biting the bullet and starting up a support incident with
Microsoft. I will report back when I learn more.

In the mean time... anyone else out there with any insight?

I have had this on one customers site also. I have tried everything
can think of to fix, but the only work around I found is to export th
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Device.
Registry key from the administrators profile which I could set
default printer on and import it to all users who had the problem. No
it works fine

Similar issue

I had a similar issue, however this was not with a network printer. The problem was that printer name had a space before the characters.
