Cannot set a desktop background

Hi, I had a big Windows problem a little while ago followed by a reinstall
and a few viruses, and since then I haven't been able to get a picture to
display on the desktop. It's just a solid colour, that changes every time the
computer starts up, and also the Screen Saver goes back to the default XP one
every startup. When I go to the display properties/desktop tab to change the
background, the box with the pictures in it and the Browse button are greyed
out and I can't select anything.

I have StyleXP installed, but have never had this problem with it before,
and even StyleXP can't get the background to show. When I apply a background
with it, the colour of the desktop just changes as it refreshes. Has anyone
heard of this before, and have a fix for it? As I really don't want to do
another reinstall already.

Your problem is the registration being corrupted. Not only do you have the
problems listed below, you also have other registration problems. If Restore
does not help... you may need to have a clean reinstall.

Thanks, I tried that but no success. Still no backgrounds, still default
screensaver. Anything else? Please?
