For some reason I cannot send email (using Outlook or
Eudora) when I connect through a VPN.

At some point I thought it was related to messages being a
few lines long but this seems to not hold true anymore.

When I try to send a message it seems to time out with the
following error:

The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the
server. (Account: 'mailhost', SMTP
Server: 'mailhost.domain.com', Error Number: 0x800ccc0f).

I've tried different settings on both Outlook and the VPN
setting but I always get the same results. I don't have
any problems sending email from inside the network.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

where is the mail server?

This is common. Most ISP's e-mail is setup so that only people connected to
their network can send e-mail. When your are connected via a VPN you are
probably connecting to a network other than your ISP's.
