I have a new Dell computer with Windows Vista (about 4 weeks now). Suddenly
(as of yesterday evening), I am unable to send email. I am getting no error
message and I have checked the outgoing server details and there is nothing
wrong.

I too am having the very same problem as of yesterday morning! I have
hughes.net, and they said their technicians are working on it. But it doesn't
seem right that I can receive & not send. My other secondary email worked
fine! HELP!

Send and receive use different protocols.

Send - SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
Recieve - POP - Post Office Protocol (currently version 3 thus POP3)

So what happens when you try to send?
Does the message stay in the outbox? Can you delete it?

Gary VanderMolen

If there's an error message, copy it and paste into a reply here.
Does the sent message leave the outbox, or is it stuck in the outbox?

Gary VanderMolen

There is no error message listed. The sent message stays in the outbox until
I delete it. I always get a message saying to confirm my user & password. And
when I do, the error box pops up with no error message. Like I said, Hughes
says they're working on it. But why would it not be fixed after over 24
hours? And why can I receive & not send? I'm at their mercy. A huge satellite
company like that and it's not fixed yet? I don't get it.

As a stopgap get yourself a Gmail account...

Gmail is very versatile in so far as it is web mail, thus freeing you from a
particular ISP
and yet works very well with POP and SMTP email clients. It has excellect
spam filters
and a 2gb archive. You can always set it to autoforward emails to your
original
account should you ever get it working although having tried gmail you may
well
be tempted to forward your original account to gmail instead.

I have the same problem as Christy S., also with a new Dell laptop with
Vista. All was fine till one particular outgoing e-mail got stuck in my
Outbox. When I tried to delete it I got an error message stating, "An
unknown error has occurred." Ever since then I have not been able to send
any other e-mails but I can delete them except for the first one.
Thanks for any help, I'm so frustrated!

This issue of a message being stuck in the outbox is a very common
occurrence with Windows Mail.
A successful fix has been developed by Steve Cochran:

Go to http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/
Be sure to read the Program Operation notes! When you start to
download the file, be sure to choose Save rather than Run.
After wmutil.zip finishes downloading, choose Run, then Extract. Then it
will show the extraction folder with two files in it, WMUtil.exe and scxout.dll.
Run WMUtil.exe, wait until the buttons become active, then click on
Clear Outbox. It may take a while. Before you start, make sure
Windows Mail is not running.

Good luck.

Hi
My name is Eileen and I am having the same problem as at midnight on
17-05-2007.
I sent emails at 11:55 and they went through however later email (eg after
midnight ) has stopped in the outbox. I can receive but not send.

Maggie, can you please let me know if the fix suggested by Gary works for
you and if yes I will try it also.

Gary can you please advise if the fix your suggesting is a one off and will
prevent this problem occurring again or will it have to be run each time the
problem occurs?

Thank you
Eileen

The fix will not prevent future occurrences (as far as we know).
You can lower the likelihood of this type of problem by following
the suggestions that have been made here with respect to antivirus
programs.

Hi Eileen,

Yes, I tried Gary's fix and it worked perfectly! Make sure you read the
Program Operation Notes though, I actually printed them out and kept them,
because I had to do the CTRL-SHIFT-ESC step in order to get all the buttons
to come up.

Good luck!

I must have bought same w dell Vista i can send not recieve ISP is comcast
ive changed mail to comcast.net smtp to comcast.net went with differant
combinations of requires auth secure log in and so on.. now i constantly
get username and password window and have both unchecked and checked
remember my credentials.. im lost i have 4 email addresses i use on old
outlook express and dont remember all this trouble been running flawless
for years.. i want the oild unsecure programs back..

First, read http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
If you have McAfee or Norton antivirus, uninstall it. Reboot and try
Windows Mail again. If it still does not work, the antivirus has
corrupted your account. Delete the accounts, then recreate
them from scratch. Follow your ISP's directions:
http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=Emailtop17686
Although the directions are for Outlook Express, they are close enough.

Once you get your email working properly, download and install
a less troublesome antivirus program such as the free Avast.
Whichever antivirus program you keep, be sure to disable its
email scanning option.
