Cannot send mail from Windows Mail

I am receiving the following message when I try to send out a message:

-- The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I can receive messages fine. I am a student and am using a university
provider service. When I try to call their "help desk" they say it is not
possible to send out messages using Windows Mail. Is this correct? Is there
not some setting I can change? The university help desk said I needed to
download Outlook, but can you use this with Vista? I have read through the
other posts, bud did not find anything that worked. Also, we have no choice
as to what antivirus software we use- If we use their service we have to have
McAfee. Is this the problem? Can it be fixed?Please help this is very
frustrating!

I send out messages using Windows Mail. It may not be possible using
them as an internet provider, especially if they don't have an outgoing
email server, or you're not set up to use it. Port 25 is often blocked
if the connection to an outgoing email server uses another internet
provider's equipment to get to outgoing email server's internet
provider - this is a commonly used method to block spammers.
You may ask Comcast if there is a method available to reach
their outgoing email server using another port, and if so, how to
set it up.

There's a Microsoft download (free) that often at least
temporarily fixes the problem. When someone tells you where to
find it, you should save the message, since if you keep using
McAfee, you'll probably need it again and again.

The more recent versions of Outlook, from 2003 on, work
under Vista.
 
The university help desk is incompetent because they gave you
a wrong answer. Well, they were partially correct in that you can't
send through their Internet service using someone else's port 25
SMTP server. There are four possible workarounds:

1. Use webmail for sending: http://www.comcast.net/webmail
2. Use a port other than '25' for SMTP, if your mail provider
has a provision for that. Comcast offers port 587, but I don't think
they allow off-network use of it.
3. Use the school's SMTP server.
4. Get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access, and
use it for your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP.
 
Had the same problem and have solved it today.

If you have an email adresse through a different server than your internet
service provider, then you should for outgoing mail (SMTP server) use the
smtp server adresse of the internet provider (not email provider smtp
server).

For incoming mail you can however use the pop3 server for the email adress
provider (not internet service provider)

So say you have an email adresse through a server called ONLINE and internet
service provider is GET.

You would then for incoming mail use following server:

pop3.online.no (email provider server)

For outgoing mail:

smtp.get.no (internet provider server)

The reason you need to use your internet provider server to send mail is
because your email provider is limiting the amount of people sending through
their server. Quite common that email provider server will not allow you to
send out mail through their server if you are using another company as
internet service provider.

The example I've shown was for my case. I used Online for getting an email
adress and Get is my internet service provider.

Look on your internet providers webpage to find smtp server if you do not
have it at hand.
As it seems you are able to recieve mail you don't need to alter this pop3
server name.
