I have not been able to fix this. Tried the utility, didn't fix the problem.
Went to Earthlinks site, changed smtp to require authentication, and changed
the port from 25 to 587 as instructed on Earthlink's website. Still nothing.
Turned off anti virus on email. Still nothing. Seems that the utility has
fixed the problem for others, didn't work for me. Can anyone think of
anything else to try?

Thanks

What error messages are you seeing when you try to send mail?

Sorry, I forgot to include in my first post. It says "Your server has
unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include
server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject
'', Account: 'pop.earthlink.net', Server: 'smtpauth.earthlink.net', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

This article lists some possible solutions:

Nothing there is going to really help me since I am not using Outlook or
Outlook Express. I have turned off anti virus, changed settings on email,
and tried the utility. Nothing seems to help. Seems to be a vista issue, as
I have no problem sending on my laptop with XP (doesn't help on this computer
though).

So what are you using for e-mail?

And followed the crystal clear instructions, including the ticks in the
right boxes?

If so, and not fixed, then it is a firewall/router problem. But you appear
to be signed up for this newsgroup OK, on the same computer?

Since the OP is posting in Windows Mail newsgroup one presumes he is using WM.

This is caused by your Anti Virus or by having your Spam filtering set to scan emails.
Some Anti Virus like Norton is so integrated with the email client that by turning off the email scanning feature will not do the job. You would need to uninstall the Anti Virus (Norton has a uninstall tool on their website since the uninstall that is on your computer will not do the job) completely and then re-install it without the email integration.

Florida Life,

Do you have your system backed up to an external hard drive or elsewhere?

Here is what I did. I restored, Windows Mail only, to a date that Windows
Mail was working properly. Then I used Steve's utility to compact my
e-mail. Plus I compact my e-mail every time the dialog box appears.

Hopefully this helps.
