Hi guys, this is driving me crazy. I have just put together a new computer
and thought I would use Vista as my OS. I installed it OK, had a bit of
trouble installing AVG virusguard but eventually got it working. I got the
system working nicely and downloaded my emails, all OK until I tried to send
one!! I tired using Outlook and Windows Mail but both failed in a similar
fashion, Outlook tells me that the SMTP port is wrong?? set to 25. It works
on my other computers(XP) on my small home network. I use BT internet as my
ISP and it is a BT email address. I saw one of the posts saying try port
587, but that didn't work on either email programme?? I have already
stripped it out and re installed from scratch and it is exactly the same? I
have removed the AVG, still the same, I have switched off the Firewall, no
difference?? Any ideas or suggestions, I feel like ditching Vista and going
back to good old XP, at least it works!!
Regards and living in hope of salvation

I think someone said to phone BT... and they will change something on their
server to let you use port 587..
Search these messages....

Stay with port 587 because that's what BT wants you to use now.
We will need to see more details of the error message you get.
Right-click on the error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.

Peter,

I had this issue and found the default checkbox for outgoing security to be the same as incoming was not checked.

Hi, I changed the port to 576, still no good, left it overnight and he
presto, working this morning?? So many thanks to those of you who have
helped me with this matter! It is good to know there are people out there
who are so helpful.

Hi Guys, I still can't send e-mails. I have uninstalled McAfee and now I am
getting an error:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: FW: Wedding Flowers
Sent: 09/08/2007 21:17

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'(e-mail address removed)' on 09/08/2007 21:17
554 5.7.1 <[email protected]>: Relay access denied

Have I dislodged a setting in Outlook, can i restore the original settings?
Please help

I think this is the issue. In Outlook, go to Tools, click Options, go to
the Mail Setup tab, click e-mail accounts, with view or change existing
e-mail accounts ticked, click next, select the account from which you are
sending this message and receiving the error if you have more than one
account, click Change, click More Settings, go to Outgoing server and place
a check next to "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication," place a
check next to use the same settings as my incoming server, click apply and
ok and see if that resolves the issue. You may need to close an re-open
Outlook for the settings to fully apply.

Hi Michael, went thru all that, no change, same problem. Any other thoughts.
Can I restore the application to factory settings, i feel i've done something
wrong?

May I suggest you try the Outlook experts who hang out in the
Outlook newsgroup: microsoft.public.outlook.general.

Agreed!:-)

Sorted. In my case in my outgoing server, i had indicated "use the same
settings my incoming" This was incorrect. I released this and used "Log on
using username and password. My original backlog has been sent and i have
subsequently sent 3 e-mails without error. p.s. I am still using SMTP setting
of 25, Setting of 587 in my case did not work.
Thanks for all your help,

Thanks for all your help,
Ah, I was perhaps a bit overzealous in giving you what were, in fact, the
proper settings for my setup in that regard.

In any event, glad you got it sorted.
