Cannot send a fax : Error 32079

On a Windows XP home PC, with Microsoft Fax service installed, the faxes
remain in the out box with the error : number of retries exceeded. The modem
does not even try to dial the number. In the Applications Journal, an error
is logged with the ID 32079.
Has anyone an idea of where the configuration might be wrong ?

Not yet. How did you install the fax service? Are you using an analog fax
modem from the Windows XP HCL list?

Thanks Russ
Our modem is internal to our brand new portable HP Pavilion ZD8000 : it is a
"conexant data fax modem with smartCP".
We did not strictly find it on an HCL dated 01/05/2003 but we found many
conexant data fax modems...
Beside this, it works very well as far as connecting to internet is
concerned.

Did you install the fax services yourself? If so, were there any error
messages along the way?
If you look at the Fax Service (Control Panel > Administrative Tools >
Services), what is its status?

Russ,
We installed the fax service in a very standard way : through the Control
panel / Add - Suppress Windows components.
Bt the way, our modem (a Conexant data fax modem with smartCP) is well
part of the HCL.

Your modem may not be compatible. Many aren't.
Do you have the answer to the rest of my questions?
Anything in Event viewer?

connexion.
The Microsoft Fax service doesn't event dial.
We tried to disable the Windows firewall : no effect.
We tried to disable Norton Antivirus : no effect.

The fact that your modem works for the Internet has no bearing whatsoever,
I'm afraid. Windows XP Fax is a very unreliable program that does not work
with many modems. We'd need more information about the installation process
itself and your faxsetup.log to see if an installation problem is present.
