I have some folders within my NAS which is visible from XP SP 2 but does not
appear when viewed from Vista Beta 2. Let me explain what I mean:

When viewed from XP SP 2:

e:\ABC\abc
e:\ABC\efg
e:\ABC\hij

When viewed from Vista Beta 2:

e:\ABC\abc

e:\ABC\hij

The NAS I have is from QNAP, TS-101.

FYI, both XP SP2 and Vista Beta 2 is on the same hardware system.

Anybody else facing this problem?

Thanks.

Hello,

There are some issues with remote storage devices that use older versions of
Samba... the problem being not all files/folders are displayed when
accessing the device from Vista, but everything works fine from older
versions of Windows.

This bug is related to an error in Samba and can be corrected by installing
a firmware upgrade from your NAS manufacturer that contains a newer version
of Samba (Samba 3.0.22 or above is needed).

Jimmy,

Thanks again. I've got the latest firmware update but still the same
problem. I'll use the information you provided to submit a request for
firmware update to the manufacturer.

hi,
same NAS & file/folder feature is still pending. not solved in builds 5384
and/or 5472. Neither all folders nor all files are listed correctly. Maybe
"samba" is the correct solution. Anyway it works correctly in vista using 3rd
party tools ;-) .
I'm sure that it's still a vista feature.
Furthermore any filesystem other than NTFS is interpreted as ntfs. Up to now
fat, fat32, reiser a.s.o don't work correctly. I'm still hoping that feature
will be fixed without upgrading firmware ...
we'll see what's in rc1 ...

Hello,

This is actually caused by an incorrect behavior of Samba, and the NAS
device by proxy.

Windows Vista uses a feature that receives the list of files really quickly.
The reason third-party apps may work is becuase they do not use this
feature.

Unfortunately, this is not something than can be fixed in a release of
Vista, because the problem is not in Vista.

So let me see if I understand. Vista has made an improvement to speed up
file lookups on my NAS drive, but now I can't see all the files? GREAT
FEATURE. I have checked and my MAXTOR SHARED STORAGE DRIVE has the latest
firmware, so it looks like I will have to stay on XP till all the
manufacturers (or at least mine) modify the firmware and fix it. Is someone
responsible to let the manufacturers know they have to fix this?

Thanks for listening, guess I will try to work with MAXTOR to get this fixed.

I have just contacted MAXTOR (who was bought by SEGATE??) and they said they
are aware of it, and are working on the issue. Did not get a warm fuzzy that
they consider it an urgent issue??? The agent said "~I can't believe we
would not have it fixed for the release of VISTA."
