First make sure that Netbios over TCP/IP is set to enabled in the network adapter, TCP/IP properties, Advanced and then the WINS tab.
You mentioned that there is a router, are all these systems on the same subnet, if they are not then you will need a WINS server or LMHOSTS file to browse
between the subnets. I am including links to some KB articles on browsing that will help with this.

Try doing a search for computers from My Network Places.
Search for the exact computer names. See if they are
even there.
