Cannot see Network Connections

the laptop in question began with an svchost error every time IE was opened,
but Real Player and other applications reacted the same way. After sending
the report to MS, I managed to get IE open, but none of the following has
eliminated the frequent svchost errors:

scanned for viruses--found none.
installed and ran Adaware, removing all issues.
installed and ran Spybot 13--got an error with a German message 90% through
the scan.
Used Hijack This to remove unwanted registry entries.
Used Windows 2000 w/SP3 install CD to repair installation.

Now when I attempt to look at the network connections all I can see is Make
New Connection despite the fact that I have two exisitng (i.e. wired and
wireless) and the wireless works. Haven't tried the wired but assume it
works too--just can't configure either.

This laptop has a lot of aviation software on it and I've tried to avoid
wiping it. Can anyone suggest a silver bullet?

Also might want to get your hands on WinSockFix -
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4372.html - I keep this handy. Very often,
the removal of scumware will wipe out your network connection. A USB memory
stick helps in these situations.

I was sure there could be resolution issues. The article number was more for
reference than anything else.

thanks

I would like to try your suggestions, but both appear to be for XP. This
newsgroup is for Win2000, I believe. At least that's why I posted here.
Can you point me to equivalent solutions for 2K. I actually followed most
of the Microsoft link, but did not solve my problem. I am about to wipe and
install XP, but would like to have tools if I see this again. Thanks for
your help.

Oops - forgot where I was, sorry. (I sub to a lot of groups!)
Did you try the WinSockFix anyway? That will run on W2k.
