Hi,
Installed win200AD in a workgroup, I installed all the updates and installed
an antivirus program. When I look at the network neighbourhood I can see
other computers on the network but I cannot see my server. From other
computers I cannot see it in the network. If I type \\servername or
\\192.168.0.1 I get an error message that computer not found. I don't have a
firewall installed and in my network properties I have Microsoft network
installed. Can anyone give me an idea what can I do to fix this problem?
Thanks.

Frank

Do you have DNS setup correctly and what client are you using....you said
workgroup group ....you mean it was a workgroup before...you turned it into
a Domain...also under your clients DNS setting what is the IP pointing
to...it needs to point to the DC ip address..and the Dc needs to have its
dns seeting point to itself....Just some ideas

thanks

Windows can be tricky sometimes, requiring things to be cleaned up
before objects become visible.

Last Friday, I had just a server and a workstation on a subnet that
could not see each other (couldn't ping computer names or IP addresses).
The following cleared things up (don't ask me why):

- open network connections control panel
- select TCP/IP settings -> Properties
- change from "use the following IP address" to "obtain IP address
automatically"
- change back to "use the following IP address"

Once I did that - even though I put all addresses back to their original
values - the server and workstation could once again see each other.

Hi

What I meant by workgroup is that I never promoted the server to a DC. I can
ping the server using its ip address and its name. What I have problem is
seeing it on the file explorer or network neighbourhood. If I type
\\servername Iget a message this message box "You do not have access to
\\servername. The service server did not get initialized" I get this even if
I am logged in as administrator at the server. Note that I can see the
workgroup that the server belongs to and all the machines in that workgroup.
Thank you.

Frank
