When connecting remotely using RD via a VPN to my office machine, I can print
locally from a printer connected with a parallel cable but if I want to use
another printer connected with a usb cable, it is not visible to me. Any
thoughts?

Map the printer to an LPT port.

It's possible to enable printer pooling and tick a second port, it's not
really what this is designed for but it does work.

Next time you RDP your client will connect to the LPT port which is thus
mapped to the USB and will therefore print.

Iain,
I just want to verify what you are saying. I would simply go into the
properties of the usb printer and check the box for lpt1 (keeping the usb
port checked) and it will then get recognized in RDP?

Hi Jerry,

If you go to the the properties for the printer and look at the ports tab
you will find the port that the printer is using. You will also find a box
labled "Enable printer pooling". By ticking this box you will be able to
assign multiple ports to the printer. Keep your existing USB port ticked and
add a free LPT port.

As long as you have LPT port mapping enabled when you connect to the remote
machine you should now be able to print.

RDP doesn't support USB printer port mapping this is the easiest work around.

Another method would be to share the printer and assign the LPT port to it
using the net use command but this would need to be done at every logon per
user.
