WIth the RTM or Beta versions of Outlook 2003 I cannot see all public
files.

The problem is DEFINETLY with Outlook 2003 because if I go to a
machine with Office XP or Office 2000 usig THE SAME ACCOUNT the
missing public folders appear.

Does anyone have ANY thoughts!

THanks in advance!

I am seeing the same problem. And I can't get any help with it. I
tried submitting an online request for help to Microsoft but it was
rejected due to a bad Product ID even though I typed exactly what O2k3
showed as the ID. I also posted a message to an Outlook newsgroup. Two
different Microsoft MVPs responded asking for more information. I
provided it and have not heard back from them.

This issue is the only thing preventing us from rolling this product
out at my University. I really hope they fix it soon.

What versionof Exchange a you running against? I might not be able to help
you as my test Exchange is down for the moment but if someone else is going
to pick this up he/she'll need this information and also whether you are
using forms for that folder and what kind of items are stored in that
folder.

PMFJI, but one thing I've seen in Outlook 2003 is you must mark any
public folders you want to see as available for offline use and also
check to download the public folders in the Advanced tab of the
Exchange Other settings if you are using a cached mode, otherwise the
folders won't be visible.

I am connecting to an Exchange 2000 system.

As for the cached mode, I am not using cached mode. I can view some
public folders but not others even though I am the owner of all of
them. And it only happens with Outlook 2003. If I log on to OWA, I can
see the folders. If I use another machine with Outlook XP, it works
too. It is only in Outlook 2003.

Craig

Did you check those settings I mentioned? Are you looking in the
Folder List and not in a Mail or other item type listing in the
Navigation Pane?

I am using the folder list. I can see other public folder and can
access them. But there are some that I can not.

So are you saying that in Outlook 2003 that Cached Exchange mode is
required to view some Public Folders? If that is the case, why can I
view some but not others?

I am not currently using Cached Exchange mode. I will switch to that
mode and see what happens.

Craig

Well, it works now but I am not satisfied with how I got it working. I
enabled Cached Mode then made sure the option to download public
folder favorites was checked. Now I can view public folders that I
place into my favorites group. The folders in my favorites are
viewable but the same one NOT in my favorites still gives me the
insufficient priviledges error. This is okay for me are for a handful
of the more computer savvy users around here but there are some users
that I support that will not know how to go through all those steps.
Other will just not want to have to do all that.

Is this a flaw in Outlook 2003 or did Microsoft intentionally
implement this? If they did it intentionally, what is the reasoning?

This is the only thing that is currently keeping us from rolling out
the Office 2003 suite across campus.

Thanks for your assistance though. It did solve the issue just not in
a way that is satisfactory to support a wide rollout.

Craig

Cached mode is not required to view public folders in Outlook 2003. If
you are using cached mode, which uses an OST file and is sort of
functionally equivalent to offline mode you have to download your
public folders and add them to Favorites to be able to see them.

In normal online mode with Outlook 2003 you should be able to see and
read any public folders you have permissions for just as with earlier
versions of Outlook.

But that is the problem. I can not view all the public folders. I am
the owner on some that I can not view. I get an insufficient
privileges error when viewing them with Outlook 2003. When using OWA
or a previous version of Outlook, I can view the folders just fine. It
only happens in Outlook 2003.

I have done some research online and found many other with this same
problem but so far no resolution.

Right now the only way to view some public folders is to use the
cached mode and favorites as you mentioned. Otherwise I have to use a
different version of Outlook or OWA.

Craig

Have you tried creating a new profile? Sometimes that solves problems
such as the one you are seeing.

Yeah. That was one of the first things that was suggested to me. I did
that but still can not view the public folders. I also installed
Outlook 2003 on a different machine, logged on and experienced the
same problem.

Craig

Odd. You mentioned insufficient privileges. What rights are you
showing for those public folders?

I am the owner of the folders. The thing is that I can view them with
Outlook XP or OWA. Now I can view them if they are in my Public Folder
Favorites but I can not view them otherwise. I get the insufficient
privileges error.

Craig

I have tried a new profile on my machine as well as installing Outlook
2003 on a fresh install of WinXP and it does the same thing there. I
don't know what else to try.

Craig

Well, I'm out of ideas. Unless something else comes up I'd say for the
moment you'll just have to use the workaround.

We're having the same problem here, this has to be a bug with Outlook 2003. Anyone actually got MS to acknowledge that its broken? Also how on earth did this get past beta testing, its pretty fundamental.

This is also stopping us from rolling out Office 2003.

Since the original post is no longer here, and you've snipped it from your
reply, I don't know that many people will be able to ascertain what the
problem was....

Are you using the Folder List view or the All Mail folders view? A clue is
Favorite Folders is at the top of the Mail Folders view and you'll see the
entire folder list in the Folder List view, but not the Favorite Folders at
the top.

Look on the Go menu or use the Folder List button at the button of the
Navigation Pane to switch views.
