cannot search from i.e. address bar

I used to be able to search from the address bar, e.g.,
just type in a word or phrase. Now, the bottom bar
indicates "done" but there are no results. The search
setting is set to "display results and go to most likely
site" but that isn't happening. Can you suggest any
settings that need to be changed?
