Cannot Save Printing Shortcuts

Our Dell notebook computer prints everything as 4 X 6 unless I reset the
Printing Shortcuts tab in Properties. Why does it not save the reset format;
I. e., letter?

The notebook is not connected directly to the HP Officejet Pro L7680
All-in-One; the notebook is on a network. The problem does not occur on the
desktop PC, which is connected via USB cable to the L7680.

Sorry, you've left out all the important bits.

Does this have anything to do with Microsoft Word, which is the topic of this
newsgroup? If so, does the problem affect only Word, or everything you print
from any program?

What versions of Windows and Office are you using?

Where is the "Printing Shortcuts tab in Properties" that you mentioned? In
Windows, in Word, or somewhere else?

The problem happens with Microsoft Word, Notepad and Internet Explorer (when
printing e-mails [we have AT&T]).
OS is Windows XP SP3 with Office 2003. The desktop has the home edition;
the notebook has the professional version.
Printing Shortcuts tab is gained by File, Print, then hitting the Properties
(Preferences with IE) button.

Please let me know if further info is needed.

Thanks for your interest in this problem.

OK, that explains why I didn't recognize the "Printing Shortcuts" title. The
dialog that appears when you click the Properties (or Preferences) button in
the Print dialog is provided by the printer driver, not by the program
(Word, Notepad, etc.). It's different for every manufacturer, and often for
each model of printer. Since I don't have an HP OfficeJet, I've never seen
that particular version of the dialog.

It also tells me what you need to do. That dialog always applies only to the
current session of the program, at least in my experience. Instead, go to
Start menu > Settings > Printers and Faxes, right-click the OfficeJet, and
click Printing Preferences. You'll get a dialog that looks the same as the
one you used before, but it applies to all Windows programs rather than any
one session of one program. After setting your preferences and clicking OK,
you should get those settings as the default in all programs. You can
temporarily override the settings (for example, to turn duplexing on or off)
by using the button in a specific program's Print dialog.

That works. My wife will be overjoyed to know that she can just go ahead and
print without having to change the properties.

It's interesting that you can change the preferences for the printer on two
different computers but -- obviously -- that's a desired outcome.

Thanks, Jay.
