win xp pro sp2
moviemk.exe v 2.1.4026.0
sony handycam dvd308

My camera generates dvd (.vob) files.

When I import these onto my HD with Sony's software, it generates (for each
"chapter") a filename.modd file (a small text file) and a large filename.mpg
file.

(1) I can view the movie in the "active movie window," but the image is not
visible in the "monitor" window (the sound is audible, though).

(2) When I try to save the movie, I get this message: "...cannot save
movie...verify source files still available [they are, as noted
above]...that the saving location is still available [it is]...that there is
enough free space [there is].

Can anybody help me with this problem, please?

Thanks,

Clem.

PapaJohn:

Thank you for your response. I finally followed this simple approach, and it
works so well that I wonder what the catch is (let me know if there is an
obvious flaw):
1.. Copy *.vob files from DVD to desktop
2.. Change extension to mpg
3.. Launch VirtualDubMod (from
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VirtualDubMod.htm)
4.. Open *.mpg
5.. Save As (F7) *.avi; without compression, the file will be absolutely
huge, but it will work (although playback may be jerky). Can also use
various compression codecs and compression settings.
6.. Import *.avi into Movie Maker. MM may fragment the file for unclear
reasons (may depend on codec and codec settings); this really does not
matter, since MM will fuse them seamlessly again.
7.. Drag onto storyboard/timeline, insert transitions and effects as
desired.
8.. Save movie "to my computer."
Thanks for your help!
