While attempting to install HP's officejet software, I changed the
Permissions to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software. After rebooting the PC, I
cannot access any of the programs. All my shortcuts appear as (name).LNK.
When I try to run any of the programs I get a message "This file is not
associated. Set an association in Folder Options.". I cannot open Windows
Explorer or the command prompt.
I reinstalled XP thinking that it would overwrite the changes, but during
installation I get errors saying that I don't permissions to associate the
files.

What are my options? Any help would be appcreciated.

Did you have an Office-related query...?

Hi Skot.

Is it so bad so you can't even set the permission back? Can you try it from
Safe Mode within the Administrator account?
I don't know if it works but did you try a System Restore?

Maybe you can try booting with your XP CD and use the Repair option instead.

If this doesn't help you I guess you will wait until some more knowledgeable
person comes by.

Kind regards,

Gunilla.

Hi Gunilla,

I tried rebooting into Safe Mode but that did not help. I also tried to
boot from the CD in repair mode to reset the security, but the system did not
allow me to either restore or copy any of the files.

I finally decided to remove the hard disk from my PC and connect it on
another PC to copy all my data files. I will format the hard drive and
reinstall XP and my software.

Thanks for your response.

Regards,

Skot
