Windows 7 Cannot retrieve pics from cd

Well, see if I can explain this problem I'm having with a CD I used to store some pictures. After storing these pics some time ago, I decided to reload them back on my desktop. When I tried to open them up, I found that I could not view them. There are a few other files on the disc amounting to 1380 kb. The disc holds about 700 mb and it shows 255 mb free, so there is a lot of pics not showing. Is there any way to bring these pics back up? I hope I've explained this fairly clearly. Thanks Keith
PS: Is there any good free recovery software out there?

I found the software that did the trick, it's freeware. It gives you the opportunity to donate which was well worth it to me.
 
Was it Recuva or something else?

It was Puran File recovery that did the trick. Free software, but opportunity to donate a minimal amt. or your choice.
