Cannot rename-file in use

When working with image files, sometimes I preview them just to double check
before renaming or deleting them. I work on a PC, Windows XP Home Edition,
100% updated version.

My problem is that after previewing an image, I cannot rename it! I get a
message that the image is open or being used by another program or person. I
order to rename this file, I must reboot the machine and rename it before it
is previewed again. This is also stopping me from using the MOVE function
when dropping a folder from one drive or machine to another. A new folder
will be made at the new location and all of the files will copy into it but
the empty folder will remain at the original location and the message will
again pop up telling me the folder is in use and cannot be moved.

I'm pretty much an expert at working with images, dealing with file/folder
management but this is something I need to stop. I cannot reboot everytime I
confirm an image before renaming it.

Any help out there? I've drawn a blank everywhere else I've posted this
question.

I have several viewers but use two exclusively. for general use I use ACDsee
version 5 and for a quick look, when I Just want to confirm the file I'm
moving, I'll right click and choose PREVIEW which is Microsoft's own image
viewer. This problem seems to exist when using the Microsoft viewer only.

Microsoft's own image viewer? Are we discussing
***Windows Picture And Fax Viewer***?

So if I understand the issue...after viewing an
image in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer...
the image can no longer be renamed or moved?

I see why you are drawing blanks...this is
an unusual problem. I wonder if the following
would help:

Try this:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

If that does nothing...try opening
a folder and go to...Tools / Folder
Options / File Types tab...and be sure
the standard image formats like...
Gif, JPEG, TIFF...are set to open
with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

If you discover a solution, let us know...
it may be useful to someone else.

John,
I've lost the last message you gave me but in essence, you told me to reset
folder options allowing Windows Picture & Fax viewer to open my images.
Also told me to goto Start/Run and run REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

Did both. No luck!

I just did an experiment. I moved an image file back and forth between two
folders on my C:\ Drive. Each time they moved fine. I then entered the file
folder, right clicked on a file, opened it with ACDSee, closed it, then
exited the folder and moved it to the other folder on my C Drive. It worked
fine the first time I tried it.

I then opened the folder, then PREVIEWed an image using Windows Picture &
Fax Viewer, closed the window immediately, closed the folder, then tried to
move it to the other folder on the C Drive. It created a duplicate folder at
the destination, moved all of the image files to the new destination, but
did not move the original file folder. Instead, I received a dialog box
telling me this...
************
Cannot delete *filename*: It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.
*************

There are no files open, nobody is using this folder and I must reboot and
come back to the empty folder to delete it!

SURPRISE!!! I just re-tried this using ACDSee... It did the same thing as
SP&F viewer!!!

This is NOT just one machine. It is happening on 4 other machines, including
my laptop that is not always part of our peer to peer network.

Whaddaya think John?

I'm a little busy for research but will test this by removing ACDSee. I'll
let you know what happens!
