I need to reformat my E drive but Windows 2000 is giving me an error
"Windows cannot format this drive: quit any disc activities..."

I have nothing else open. I thought perhaps it was Undelete (from
Executive Software) preventing the reformat so I have removed it. Still
the same problem. There is nothing in the recycle bin.

I have reformatted this drive before (NTFS @ 512bytes) and have been
tesitng it for video files but I want to increase the allocation size.

Any suggestions will be grealy appreciated.

Thanks,
George

Also check any anti-virus or boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks and format here. The set of four install disks can be created from
your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom
and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow
the prompts.

Hey Dave:

No anti-virus is running. I have Norton Systems works installed but I did not
take
theanti-virus. Just the Speed Disc, System Doc, Disc Doc and Win Doc. Could that
be it?

Are you saying I can reformat the E drive from the install CD WITHOUT
reinstalling 2000? Just checking before I try this.

Thanks,
George

Assuming you're not talking about the system or boot partition, yes you can.
Just be careful in choosing which partition to format.

One option, that usually works, is to first remove the drive letter in Disk
Management and then re-format.

Best regards

Bjorn

I found it. It is formatting now under this dialog without my having to alter
anything. This should do it.

Thanks to both of you for your help. Appreicate it!!

George

I assumed that where you were trying to format from.

Start|Run|diskmgmt.msc

| Can you be more specific. Where do I locate Disk Management to try this?

Dave:

I wish I was that smart.

Nope, I was under Control Panel on the E drive icon. Learned something new.

George

Glad to hear it's sorted.
