Cannot reboot

Hello Group,

All of the sudden my computer will not boot, running winXP Professional,
2.53 P4 processor, 1 gig RAM, never have had a problem with this home built
system, 2 years old... Nothing has changed, no new programs added.

When I try to boot computer it comes up with the normal bad boot options,
Start Window Normally
Last known good configuration
Safe mode DOS Prompt
Safe mode

Start windows normally just starts a cycle of the computer going through the
WINXP boot screen and then turning off and starting over going back to the
bad boot options as above...

Last known good sits on what seems to be a restore loading screen
indefinitely

Safe mode works fine, I can get in there scan for virus' using every program
I have, none found, including Trojans using Spy Sweeper, Ad Aware, and
Spybot S&D... The AV programs are AVG Virus, and Norton AntiVirus 2005...

so basically everything I try to adjust in safe mode, even telling it not to
load anything at start up by adjusting through MSCONFIG results in the next
reboot to the bad boot screen and away we go in our circle again...

Any ideas... My apologies if this is written poorly it has been a long
night trying to get this computer working... Thank god for my laptop and
wireless connection.. :) I am hoping there is something simple I am missing
and have just been to exhausted to figure it out. Thanks...

yes and it works, sort of... If I do the restore and choose a restore point
in which I know the computer worked, it will boot great, once... then the
next time I reboot it does the exact same thing... I have tried about 10
different restore points... This one has me a bit baffled, I do think I am
missing something simple but it obviously, is not apparent to me...
 
Update:

Not that this will tell anyone anything of use but:

Honestly I tried everything imaginable under the sun, every scenario,
removed every external device, removed every internal card that was not
required to run... I have rebooted this machine more time than I could
possibly even count, I checked temperatures, fan speeds, hard drive health
status'.... I tried safe mode, I tried sytem restore from safe mode logged
in as admin and also every possible combination of the failed boot menu...

After pretty much making the decision to throw in the towel I hooked
everything up again, installed all cards and put it back the way it was
before the problems started... Tried a few boot options again. Planned on
doing a rebuild and reformat after work today. Powered up and took the
"last known good config" option then hopped in the shower...

Got out of the shower the comp was at the log in screen... logged in all
worked great... Shut down the comp, restarted cold, booted fine... Shut
down, restart option, booted fine...

go figure... there went about 12 hours of my life and a sleepless night...

thanks for the input though..

check the event viewer to see if any useful messages were
logged.

There was only one and it was related to my wife's log in and an e-mail...
I will have to ask her about that tonight... perhaps she got something
nasty that squeezed on through the applications that we have running...

Same guy posting from the comp that was broken, - thus the different info...
