Cannot (re)install IE6 to fix slow open

G

gerrybob

This is turning into an ordeal but any help is appreciated.

I have read all posts I could on the IE6 slow opening problem. Ran
IEfix.exe. Followed the KB articles, i.e. register the various dll's, etc.
and figuring out how to repair IE6 and XP when SP1 is installed. Nothing has
worked and here is where I am at now.

Modified the registry key to reinstall IE6 (change value from 1 to 0). and
downloaded IE6.1 setup. Setup runs and then stops with the following
message: The program you are trying to install has not passed the windows
logo test..... component will not be installed....try setup again." Or
similar nonsense. tried again twice, same sh, ah stuff.

Any ideas about what is going on? Ideas on why so many of our browsers
suddenly got these symptoms would be amusing also :)

Thank you,
Gerry

gerrybob,
The first thing to do is to scan your system for the possibility of
unknown\unwanted spyware or parasites that may be causing your problem(s).

Mike,

Thank you for replying.
I have been running Spybot Search & Destroy for days weeks with latest
updates. I also have Spyware Blaster and BH Helper Demon. Wish it were so
simple.
Ran through all of the steps and their permutations in the Windows Update
help file you named with no luck. Can't complete the IE6.1 install.
By the way, I can open an IE6 browser window, although it takes forever and
the PC doesn't think it's installed any longer. The help\about window
reports 6.0.2800.1106.xpxp1.020828-1920 if that is significant.

gerrybob,
Try posting your problem in the "Windows Update" newsgroup.
Include what you've tried already and your IE version info.
