Cannot put computer into Standby

windows XP SP1. Has previously worked. Now the Standby
button in the TURN OFF COMPUTER box is dimmed and the
keyboard sleep button does not work.

I can't use standby either. In my case, the system says that the
Intellipoint (mouse/trackball) driver is what's blocking standby. I
don't really care; it's a desktop system and I can afford the energy.
At least that's _all_ it does to XP. On my Windows 98SE system, this
driver killed ZoneAlarm and several Norton utilities. Interestingly,
the software that got zapped was exactly what would have told me what
that driver was doing and how to get rid of it without (Ouch!) a
Windows reinstall.
 
A year or so ago, I had a similar problem where it said my keyboard was the
culprit preventing the system from going into Standby. It turned out that
the version of Adobe Type Manager was the problem. As soon as I uninstalled
it (not sure why it was installed in the first place), Standby worked like a
charm.
