Cannot print "selection", and cannot restore to previous point

I can print a whole text file or a whole email or a whole web page
just fine, but I cannot print a selected part of anything anymore.

If I highlight the text I want to print and choose "print" inside the
"File" selection, I cannot check the box "selection", which is
supposed to print only the text I've highlighted. I can only choose
"All", which is selected by default. The choice 'Selection" and it's
little circle to check is low-lighted, and not accessible.
------------
Also - I cannot "restore" Windows XP to a previous good point. I
tired because I thought I could find a point where the "print
selection" mode was working, however I've tried the last 5 points in
restore, going bsck 5 days, and it goes through the motions, reboots,
then eventually tells me it cannot restore to that point.

Could running Norton's "clean sweep" erase restore points that were
saved by XP?

The only other thing I did was installed the Norton Personal
Firewall, and then also removed it because I could get no web pages to
display, after trying different configurations.. I don't know why
either of these programs would affect the "print selection" command
though.

I have no virus - just ran an up-to-date Norton anti-virus. Nothing.

Any input is appreciated. Without being able to print a "selection",
it's a real pisser...

You can try this hack: http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~jf3000/app.htm download
the 61k version, read and follow the simple intructions. jf3000 enables
greyed out boxes.......most of the time.
